[Be it delivered by one of the robots, tucked carefully into Kai's delivery load, or left by one of the offworlders recruited in Havenwell's current Santa-shenanigans, Kai will receive a letter! It's written nice and legibly, though in a hand that's probably less than practiced with the art of letter writing, and in a few spots, there's some ink buildup where a pen may have sat against the paper while words were mulled over. It reads:]
Kai
Maybe it has something to do with sitting down and thinking things over for a while, but some thoughts can be a little easier to write down rather than trying to find all these words when we're talking face-to-face. It's made me want to write something down for you.
I'm so, so glad that the the both of us came from different worlds, and that we got to meet here. When I first arrived here, I was absolutely sure that I'd never be able to rely on anyone else, and I definitely didn't think that I'd ever end up caring so deeply about someone the way I do for you. The first time I fell for someone, it nearly destroyed me, and I was honestly terrified when I realized that it was happening again. But, with you, there was never any reason for me to worry. I don't think I've ever felt so comfortable and at peace with anyone, even before I told you how I feel, even before I figured out what I was feeling for you was. I'm glad I know now.
I love you, and having you by my side makes me want to look forward to the future. Thank you for always being there for me, and for always being endlessly gentle with my heart.
[Imagine Kai's surprise when one of the last letters he drew from his pile was actually addressed to him.
The last note he'd received had gone... it had been important. A turning point. Kai had made up his mind to do whatever it was he could do. It had taken guts, so Kai had to match.
This one, too, came from a strength deeper than he expected. It took him even more by surprise. He read it once. He read it twice more when he'd found a quiet place to sit, slowly tracing over the words as he held his face. He followed the slopes and curves of 'I love you' until he couldn't quite see it anymore, the lines blurring until Kai scrubbed his eyes with his sleeve. That just made everything feel to bright to look at, the concept of looking forward to a future was just...
He'd folded the letter back up carefully. It came with him to their house, their room. It found its home in one of the bedside drawers, protected by a soft bug and its pretty flower.
There were a number of soft, slow kisses in your immediate future, Shinji.]
How lucky for the both of them, then, that Shinji is already nice and close at hand.
After a long day of emotional honesty in the form of letter writing, the idea of unwinding with music and soaking up some warmth under the kotatsu is incredibly appealing. So, head rested on folded arms and headphones turned down to an easy murmur, he's not quite at the point of dozing off, but given enough time, that might be an equally tempting outcome. Very cozy, very relaxed. Very unaware that someone else has come home, but plenty ready to receive whatever feelings might be brewing as a result of his work over the day.
There were a few moments where Kai just leaned in the doorway, taking in the extremely cozy scene playing out in front of him. It was a little strange maybe, that just taking this in made him feel as full and content as part of that note had done. Maybe it was because it really hadn't been that long ago that Shinji had been much more skittish. Seeing him so comfortable and everything that meant was very heartwarming.
It sort of felt like maybe he shouldn't interrupt it either. Kai hadn't missed those tired looks this month. Knowing Shinji was the one that was eluding sleep, it probably would have been better if Kai had let him actually doze off. Get a good nap in while he kept an eye on him. That was a good thought, but oops, he'd already left his spot by the doorway.
Oops, he was already kneeling down next to him, planting the first smooch right there on his almost-snoozy noggin.
Unfortunately, the train to sleepytime junction won't be pulling out of station just yet, not with that little bit of affection landing atop his noggin.
"Mmh," he rouses from his not-slumber with a very subdued noise of surprise, tugging one of those earbuds out so he can turn to more fully face this mysterious source of smooches. Surprise, surprise, (not surprisingly) he is greeted by a face as warm and comforting as the blanket skirting the table. "Hey."
Give him a moment to stretch his arms out in front of himself as he sits up more fully, pushing away whatever feelings of fatigue had begun to settle over him in favor of aiming his attention at Kai. "Just get home?"
Kai might have felt a bit guilty for rousing him if he hadn't been so charming through the process. Smiling lightly, Kai gently brushed his fingers through Shinji's hair a few times. Gotta pet the cat.
He nodded a bit as Shinji sat up, letting his hand come down to rest on the table top with Shinji's. "Mhmm, pretty much." Now the question was how direct did Kai want to--
If he's looking for Shinji, then he's come to the right place! And if he's looking for more reactions to those gentle touches, then hopefully him briefly closing his eyes with a soft, content hum as Kai's hand runs through his hair is a nice enough prize.
"Oh?" That's not an unusual answer, but it's always a nice one to hear accompanying such a fond look, and it manages to tug a soft smile out of him. He spies that hand coming to a rest near his, and clearly the only course of action he can possibly think of taking here is to slide his on top of it. There we go.
Very good. It was warmer already. "Mm, I'm home." The order of events was a little backwards, but it still felt really nice all the same. Nice enough that his revised plan of having a bit of conversation first was being set back aside in favor of his original intent.
Shinji had said that anytime Kai wanted to smooch again, he'd like that. They'd agreed! That this would be a good thing. So Kai felt all the more empowered to simply lean in, gently catching Shinji's smile with his own as he pressed forward with a kiss.
What could possibly enhance the sheer coziness of this situation if not a soft pair of lips pressed against his own? His breath catches in surprise, but it doesn't take long before he's relaxing into the contact.
Is there some sort of plan in place here? Shinji isn't sure, but the part of him that might worry that there's some specific reason for this sudden display of affection, some reason that might be worth at least overthinking, is at ease enough to just let this happen. No worries, no wondering about where it all may have come from, just basking in this incredibly pleasant moment.
It would all become clear soon enough. Explained, at the very least. Maybe it wouldn't make that much sense, since Kai wasn't sure he'd be able to explain it well enough. That he was feeling so much that he wasn't sure what to do with it besides try and share some of that overwhelming warmth between them.
For now it was just more of this. Kai made a low, encouraging hum as Shinji relaxed into it. He leaned into it a bit more in turn, drew the warmth of the moment out as long as it felt nice. Shinji hadn't known the threat of so many slow, soft kisses, but it was here now. This was just number one.
He drew back with an enigmatic little curve of his mouth, staying close enough. "I got your letter," he murmured softly between them. Hopefully it'd been made clear that this was a positive reaction.
With the looming threat yet unknown, there's only undeniable pleasantness to soak up with this drawn out kiss. As Kai parts, Shinji leans forward just a touch, as if to chase that smooch down for a tiny bit longer.
The explanation is a nice enough alternative, one that Shinji replies to with a soft, surprised, "Oh...!" That! Sure does explain the sudden outpouring of affection, not that he necessarily needed it, but also keeps any worries of needing to see people for any sadder reasons at bay. This is all good, all very good, even if the thought of Kai actually reading what he'd written sends his heart fluttering.
"That... was fast," is what comes tumbling out of his mouth next, accompanied by some of that familiar color rising to his cheeks.
That brief chase was remarkably charming, an extremely reassuring that the coming onslaught was going to go just fine. Not that there was that much doubt, just, you know, considering whether or not to play in moderation. That sort of thing.
Kai let out a light laugh, tilting his head a touch with puppyesque curiosity. "That so?" Gosh, how speedy could it have been then, if Shinji was that surprised. "I got to be my own Santa of Clause," he went on with another chuckle, "so it was a nice surprise."
And then quieter, but there was no missing it when they were so close. "I'm kinda... it was a lot. A good kind. I'm feelin' a lot."
With the robots recruiting so many people, Shinji was sure they'd be a little more backed up then that! But perhaps it was just incredibly good luck that landed his letter in Kai's hands right away, in his own stack of deliveries.
"Yeah?" he replies, a small, hopeful sounding lilt running through his voice. He knows that what he wrote was... a lot, and even though it didn't feel entirely like it was a risky move to be showing so much of his hand, hearing Kai say it was good is a huge reassurance. A lot, but in a good way.
Time to hit the pause button on that quiet murmur of music and pop that other earbud out, let Kai have Shinji's full focus in the face of these feelings. "I meant it, everything I wrote," he adds, a bit shyly, but there's truly no missing any of those words at such a close range.
Kai nodded. He knew. Knowing him, these weren't the kinds of things that Shinji would say just because some robots told him to write nice things or anything like that. There were plenty of other things to write about if that was the case. These kinds of things weren't things someone like Shinji just threw around. In fact saying it the first time had been... not the most intended thing in the world.
It was a little bit different then, saying it on purpose because he wanted him to know. It was a different kind of vulnerability, a different kind of trust. Thank you for being endlessly gentle with my heart.
"I wanna keep it safe," he said, lifting his free hand to tap at his own chest. "Right here."
As if Shinji needed even more assurance that he made the right decision to put that trust in Kai. The sheer warmth of that sentiment blooms right in his heart, and melts away those traces of lingering reserve.
"There's probably nowhere safer to keep it."
A place where those feelings can be well protected. Since he's never been failed in that regard, Shinji can trust the absolute security afforded there. Similarly, he lays his palm against his own chest, "And... you have a place, too. Right here."
Ah. A place right there to put all his Feelings. Those things that Shinji definitely deserved to know. Now if only Kai knew how to articulate them. It would have been a lot easier if he was certain what they were.
They were good ones at least. That he was sure of. A bit overwhelming, if he was gonna be frank about it. The good kind though, even if it felt like sometimes he was going to burst. That didn't sound very positive though. He needed to workshop it a bit more.
"A real good place for 'em," Kai said, smiling fondly at the sight. He was going to need another moment or two before he could work himself up to trying to fumble around with words though. Luckily there was a very good option on the table to occupy their time with, and Kai was leaning in for Slow Soft Kiss #2.
Whatever feelings those may be, nebulous in spite of how generally understood they are, Shinji's still ready to welcome them and keep them nice and safe. He doesn't expect Kai to articulate all those feelings perfectly, and honestly, putting them them through with actions like the follow-up kiss are plenty to convey what he's feeling. Sometimes actions are just easier. More straightforward. Shinji understands.
This second kiss is still a little surprising, but doesn't quite catch him off-guard like the first one. He holds his breath for just a moment before closing his eyes and pressing forward, his hand leaving his chest in order to slide up to Kai's shoulder. This is good, the action seems to say as Kai's shoulder is given a gentle squeeze. Stay right here with him.
It wasn't like he was planning on anything else today, but he would have been easily convinced to change them with that little move. There was a pleased sound somewhere at the back of his throat as he pulled his own maneuvers. He reached his own hand up to cradle Shinji's head, a spot of confidence to balance the almost shy way Kai moved his mouth against his.
He really wasn't sure how much he'd be able to convey it with just this. The effort was there, of course, but some things could have been lost in translation. Just how much Kai treasured Shinji's feelings, for example. Or how much he wanted to say he loved him, but he had no idea what love actually felt like and didn't want to say something that would hurt Shinji more instead. Just as another example.
The finer points may not be entirely clear, but the fact remains that even an action like this conveys an awful lot. Whether or not Kai can ever find it in himself to say those words, and in this moment Shinji's sure he wouldn't hold it against him if 'not' turned out to be the case, there's more than enough proof here to beat back any doubt about whether he's wanted and cared about. That's an infinitely valuable thing already. Putting words to it is second to making sure that feeling exists, and he'd hate to think that Kai was simply saying it for his benefit if it wasn't something he wanted to say.
A soft and surprised little hum escapes his throat as that hand reaches up to steady him in place, and after a moment of uncertainty, his own bit of boldness bubbles up long enough for him to tilt his head slightly, leaning in just a tiny bit more in what he hopes is an encouraging action. This? This is nice, you're doing great, Kai.
Very encouraging indeed. There was a low, pleased hum in return, fingers carding through Shinji's hair. Everything was soft and warm, building a cozy fire right there in his belly. Had it not been for silly things like breathing, Kai would have been content to live there for a while.
But even as he pulled away for such a necessity, he stayed right there where he could be a breath away from all the feelings of kiss number three. "Whatever happens," he murmured softly, "You're home. I'll come back to you every time."
See? With sentiments like that being presented, he can't possibly find it in himself to doubt how sincere Kai's affections are.
If the flush that's hit his cheeks isn't from kiss number three, it's definitely from the overwhelming joy and warmth those words stoke within him. That he's worth returning to. That he can be trusted with being a safe haven. It's intense - enough so to twist his stomach up, but that gut reaction of it potentially being too huge of a responsibility to trust him with is drowned out with how thoroughly he wants to hold on to that trust as tightly as possible. Doesn't Kai deserve a home he wants to come back to, after all? They've agreed before, it's not the place so much as the people there, and if Shinji can be that... he desperately wants to give it to him.
And so, he nods slightly, mouth drawn tightly with a barely constrained smile as he tries to figure out what he could possibly say to that.
"And I'll welcome you back every time," is what he decides on, a sheepish but sincere mumble. "No matter what."
Kai met those hints of a smile with an unrestrained one of his own. He gently pulled Shinji back in close with a careful bonk of their foreheads, giving their noses a fierce little rub against each other. His expression sombered just a bit from there, but it was no less adoring.
Cute... Kai, that's too cute. Shinji squeezes his eyes shut at that little assault, but lets out a single, soft laugh when it's done.
It's still so much, to be thanked for something like this. For wanting to keep someone close by, for wanting to cherish them.
"I could say the same to you." Not just a manner of echoing the sentiment back for the sake of it, but it's also a measure of not outright turning down the gratitude. That's something worth keeping safe too, even if it is still a lot. "I'll always give you as much as I can."
Letter delivery!
