These were admittedly somewhat new habits. He'd been very earnest back then! Things just... changed, sometimes.
He just shook his head in turn. He really didn't want to actually take her money for just doing whatever the hell he wanted to do. That seemed weird, but that was an argument for later. Kai was more than content to keep up this light going for now. "How sneaky of you," Kai chuckled, putting the helmets away.
All ready to go, Kai beckoned towards her to follow him to the entrance with some pep in his step. "Let's see what we can find."
Don't worry, there would be no arguing when she simply shoved the money into his account. He'd advertised this as a service and she'd wanted to support him! Just deal with it!!
But now it was time to simply bounce along beside him. "So you think they'll have beetles after all? I helped out a little bit with the renovations, but I didn't get to look around at all."
"Hmm... maybe! I didn't get a chance to explore much when I was here either." Too much labor to worry about and babies to look after in the downtime. Who knew what secrets were in store.
"Guess we'll find out!" Let him just sneakily pay for two whole entries with his phone there, gently ushering Kyoko along. "Even if not, it'll be nice to see how all the kids are doing."
Huh, weird, didn't they have to pay to get in? Was there gonna be a place to pay further inside? Was this actually some kind of pay-when-you-leave deal? Robot zoos sure were mysterious.
The conversation about baby aminals was way more interesting than all that, though. Kyoko giggled, raising an eyebrow at Kaito. "If you talk about them like that, it sounds like you adopted the whole zoo."
"Glad to hear you take fatherhood so seriously," she deadpanned. "Maybe you can be the cool motorcycle-riding uncle who comes by to spoil them once in a while, then."
There was a quick wrinkle of his nose. Of course that's where it would have been going. "Yeah, I'll take cool uncle any day. Works out better for all of us."
Hey, he could have been the cool motorcycle dad too! All he had to do was accept the responsibility!
But Kyoko was back to giggling already, arms swinging as she bounced alongside him. "So which of your cute nieces and nephews should we visit first? Do you play favorites?"
"Gojira...." That was enough of a surprise that Kyoko needed a moment to process it, before she could tackle the next round of questioning. "--You really do? Have you named all of them?"
Kai laughed at that, waving a hand in front of his face. "Nah. Not all of 'em. Gojira hung out at our place when the renovating was goin' on, so I'm biased."
"Pretty much," Kai chuckled. He'd been slipping his hand in his pocket, pulling out that familiar little pouch of dragon snacks. "Ready to spoil on the fly and everything."
Indeed, Kyoko knew that little packet well; Spoiling the Children was a favorite pastime at Rawna's temple. But her eyes widened when she saw it now.
"Are you really gonna?" her voice was hushed, and she veered in gently closer to Kaito so he could hear this secret discussion. "Is that even allowed, in a place like this?"
But this rascal wouldn't be going to zoo jail if she could do anything about it. Kyoko kept close as they made their way to lizard town, determined to block his secret activities from view. "What a devoted father... amazing."
Kai on the otherhand wasn't too fussed about zoo jail. He figured probably the worst thing that would happen was that Kai would get a gentle reprimand to please don't do that again.
Truly a dangerous lad, so unafraid of the Law.
"Devoted to my cool uncle status," he corrected. Lizard town was just ahead of them now-- you could tell, because all of those heat loving lizards were piled up on the sunniest spot they could find.
Look at them all. Majestic creatures, every last one of them. Kai echoed Kyoko's motions, squinting a little as he did so.
"Yeah, well, you're gonna demote me in a second, 'cuz they all look like Gojira."
Well, not all of them. They did come in different colors and all that, but a lot of them looked fairly similar to each other. Not being able to recognize your kid was probably a surefire way to end up in the Bad Parent club maybe.
Oh, but, there was one with [definitely pre-established colors] that had (slowly) turned its head towards them as if Kai's mop of hair was a beacon. It (slowly) flickered its tongue. Its majestic down on its back swayed gently in the breeze faster than any of those latter motions. Kai pointed at that one.
Kyoko stuck her tongue out, just for a second. Her dad surely wouldn't be able to recognize her either, but he'd never visited her or given her snacks, so Kai's doing great.
Dutifully, Kyoko leaned over to get a look at the Boy, cooing. It was a little surprising--she definitely wasn't always this into lizards, but months of visiting the fledglings had fully swayed her into appreciating the aesthetic. "Ohhh! A fine young man!!"
It was true, Kai had probably caught sight of her cooing at the baby dragons much like this before. Truly it had been some good progress. Please appreciate all of their majesty.
"Mhmm. Real handsome fella." Kai was engaging in an intense bout of staring with the lizard. It was as if they were sizing each other up, or more likely just searching for a sign that actually yes, they knew each other. Luckily, Kai knew that Kyoko wasn't the only one that had come to learn what the pouch in his pocket meant.
Cupping a hand around his mouth, Kai called out, "Heeyyyyy~ Gojiiii~!" This effort was met with another (slow) flicker of a tongue. That was until Kai held that little pouch up for the lizard in question to see and then
Whoa, suddenly things were happening, which meant it was time to spring into action! Kyoko shifted to block that bag of probably forbidden snacks from at least one angle of sight, casting her gaze frantically around for anyone who might be watching.
"Not so loud!" she hissed. She would protect this touching father-and-son reunion! With all her might!
That's extremely kind of you, Kyoko! Even if, maybe, this frantic behavior was even more attention-grabbing. Maybe.
"Mmmhm." Geez, what a nonchalant response that was. Kai was hoisting himself up on the railing, crossing his arms just over the edge so he could get a good look at this big, beautiful boy (?).
"Hey there, bud." Flick flick went that long tongue. "You gettin' enough to eat in there?" Flick flick flick. "I know, s'gotta be rough if all your friends are as gluttonous as you." Look at that impatient stamp of feet. "Yeah, yeah."
Fishing out a generous piece of mystery jerky, Kai kinda just... let it drop. Oh no. An accident. "Oh no," he echoed, softly. "Oops." He said. "Oh dear."
Luckily, she didn't keep up the intense guarding for too terribly much longer. It was just too hard to ignore all the cute chatter happening next to her.
Soon, Kyoko was leaning against the rail next to Kai, peering down at his son. "Amazing... you still have a bond." The pure and beautiful parent-child bond of jerky. "Don't you think you're gonna bring over the rest of them too, though?"

"Absolutely," Kai confessed without a single moment of hesitation. He was in fact extremely biased. "We're gonna go find Gojira first."
This way, giggles, in the general direction of very large lizards.

That's. That's cute? That's cute!
